Dr. Andrea Sullivan-Clarke, a Native American philosopher from the Wind Clan of Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma, and an Associate Professor at Indiana University Bloomington, comes on the podcast to confront America's vexed history with teaching and learning about Native American and Indigenous culture. Andrea first explains the importance of listening to how Indigenous communities identify themselves.
For a long time, Andrea explains that America ignored the importance of indigenous philosophies, specifically the art of storytelling, and how storytelling conveys not just lessons but freedom in interpretation. As Andrea says "Oral traditions face losses from colonization, so recovery and sharing remain important" in order to learn the factual history about their communities.
Similarly, Andrea stresses the responsibilities for institutions and scholars to engage in respectful, reciprocal relationships with indigenous communities.
