What's your favorite scary movie? Such an iconic line from one of my favorite horror movies, but it's not every day that you can ask this question to an award-winning horror writer!
I first ask Paul about his 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World which was adapted by M. Night Shyamalan into Knock at the Cabin (featuring Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Rupert Grint). He answers all of my adaptation questions including what he thought of M. Night Shyamalan changing some of his major plot points. He explains why it was so important for him to explore queer trauma in this novel and why he's always preferred psychological horror over slasher films.
I then ask Paul all about his new novel Horror Movie which is a chilling twist on the "cursed film genre." Paul explains the inspiration for his book including the multiple meanings of cursed films! He explains how he lets his subconscious guide his stories and why he loves to write about his obsessions. Then, he provides really helpful advice for aspiring writers and why the horror community is such a welcoming and supportive space for creative people!
Then, Paul plays a horror movie game with me and reveals his favorite horror films from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. And Paul gives a hint regarding whether Horror Movie will be adapted into a film!
