It’s been a La Crosse staple for 50 years and to celebrate that anniversary, the Hungry Peddler is going to start knocking down some walls.

“The best way to celebrate 50 years is to spend some money,” Hungry Peddler operator Jared Burish said Monday on WIZM’s La Crosse Talk.

The south side restaurant is about to go through some renovations this summer.

Burish said they’ll be doing some outside construction work to the building beginning in June and will close down for the month of August to update the interior.

“That’s when we’re going to be busting through the wall, and updating the bathrooms and a full kitchen renovation,” Burish said.

The renovation will mostly happen where staff work — the kitchen, wait station and dish area.

Burish added that hometown feel the Hungry Peddler won’t change.

“We’re not trying to change any part of the good, comfy feel,” he said. “We’re not trying to change that environment for our patrons at all. We’re only trying to make things better for them.”

On the show, Burish also talked about the ups and downs of being in this type of business over the past few years. Burish and his wife also run Vik’s Bar and the Mirage, which just moved into a new building on the south side.
