Welcome to our first dry witter of 2024, we have on the programme great friend of the show, the irrepressible Mickey O'Brien, broadcaster, musician and lovely person. Mickey hasn't drunk for a couple of years after a self hypnosis session in Lockdown and is blooming quite obviously. Here are some links and words from Mickey

As I said, for me, I need to know why something works and because I proved to myself - totally unexpectedly - that it does, I had to work out what was going on under the bonnet for me to have responded so effectively.

Here are the links I wanted to share with you!:

1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP9byfvQoLs - Dan Jones Hypnotherapist (Ericksonian Hypnotherapy - Sir Milton Erickson)

2. https://www.hypnotherapy-directory.org.uk/memberarticles/the-meaning-of-ericksonian-hypnosis-and-how-it-differs-from-traditional-met - this explains more about the method of clinical self-hypnosis that worked for me. It reiterates why it worked when I talked about the choice of images I put into the TV screens that the YouTube script was asking me to do - were personal and related to my fears and hopes only.

Ericksonian hypnosis is a modern hypnotic method which taps into the potentials of the subconscious mind through a rather subtle, respectful and personalised method which usually involves the use of such tools as body language, stories, metaphors and other hypnotic techniques that are tailored to improve the condition of patients.

3. https://www.udemy.com/user/danieljones11/ - The person who did the YouTube video has his own course online, so I bought it (for about £15) to help me understand the science about why and how hypnotherapy worked for me:

"Different types of therapy on its own and then looking at people that have had those different types of therapy but had hypnosis with those therapies, have found that the therapy is more effective because they've had the hypnosis as well.

And the reason behind that is that hypnosis is accessing the optimal learning state. It's accessing the part of the brain that updates patterns in your brain.

So when you learn something new, what happens is you update the pattern for whatever that is. So when you're learning a language, whether it's at birth and growing up as a toddler and learning your native language or whether it's learning a language in school when new words stick.

What's happened is the patterns in your brain, so the neurons in your brain have wired in such a way that makes it so that now there's the connections to make it.

So this is a new pattern.

So it could be that you're saying a word wrong until that point. And then all of a sudden you start saying the word right. Everyone reaffirms that tells you, yes, that's how it's supposed to be said.

So your brain updates and says, right, we'll keep it at this point, this is how this is supposed to be.

With psychological problems, if someone has a problem, whether it's depression, anxiety, a phobia, an addiction, whatever it is; the whole time they're going to therapy, hopefully it's working on the patterns and trying to alter the way they think or relate to whatever that problem is.

But once change actually happens, what has happened for that change to be lasting is that the patterns have updated and there was some research done on looking at.
