The two-party system seemingly drives modern American politics. Despite the impression of two completely opposed ideologies engaged in ongoing political conflict, the truth is that both versions of the American "left" and "right" stem from Liberalism. What we label as American conservatism and progressivism are essentially two offshoots of the same Liberal ideology. However, it doesn't have to remain this way.
