* A Note from Petra: The war of the worlds was published long before radios and televisions. However, as a tribute to the radio drama broadcast in 1938, I have used radio sounds to distinguish the direct newspaper quotes from other narrative. Additionally, the action in this episode begins to ramp up, so we may veer from the "sleep stories" vibe. Headphones are recommended. I hope you enjoy!

In Chapter 13 of The War of the Worlds, the narrator continues to witness the destructive power of the Martian tripods, which have decimated much of the surrounding landscape. He describes their advanced technology and the sense of helplessness among the survivors. As panic spreads, the narrator becomes increasingly aware of humanity's vulnerability to the Martian forces.

In Chapter 14, the narrator reflects on the devastation brought upon London, as the Martians continue their relentless assault. He encounters a group of survivors, and they discuss the dire situation. The narrator also grapples with feelings of despair, realizing that humanity’s military forces are powerless against the Martians’ superior technology. The atmosphere is one of fear and uncertainty as the invasion escalates.
