Introducing Andrew Undi Lee

A graduate of both UTS (Design) and AFTRS (Drama Directing), Andrew Undi Lee is a queer Australian-born Korean director, writer, producer and production designer. Andrew (aka Undi) received many accolades for his prior work as well as featuring in the Sydney International Film Festival. His work spans genres while combining Australian, Korean and LGBTQIA+ sensibilities.

His latest work, Night Bloomers (SBS), is a Korean Australian horror series. SXSW (South by South West) Sydney invited Night Bloomers to feature as part of their prestigious TV Premieres section.

SBS says

Night Bloomers is a horror anthology series exploring multigenerational stories from the unspoken immigration experiences of the Korean Australia diaspora. It adapts a modern twist on ancient Korean folklore stories, mixed with the supernatural beliefs and story traditions from Korean Shamanism. In it, is a creepy and off-kilter world with interconnected heroes. All struggle with fractured identities impacted by war and immigration. Each hero faces mortality in a unique way, coupled with a deep yearning that manifests in malevolent forms of evilness that the ensemble of characters must overcome collectively. If not, the goblins, ghosts and creatures that live in and around them will continue to devour the community.

In this podcast, Andrew Undi Lee discusses his perspective as all his identities, telling stories to which he relates that then have power to speak to a wide range of audiences.

Acknowledgement of Country

Dark Matter Zine Acknowledges this recording is taking place on the unceded Country of the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians of this Country. I pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

(I have occasionally acknowledged Country in podcasts. This year I aim to lift my game in many areas, so I plan to Acknowledge Country in every podcast. An Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners can be done by anyone. It’s a way of showing awareness of, and respect for, the Aboriginal Traditional Owners of the land where a meeting or event is held. For more information about Country and respect for Australia’s First Nations, read this post that also has links to useful websites.)
