El árbol más grande del mundo ha tenido por lo menos dos nombres. Uno, el que le dió la colonia Kaweah, una comunidad del socialismo utópico que estableció un asentamiento en las montañas Sierra Nevada al sur de California, para llevar a cabo una empresa de explotación forestal. El otro nombre, es el que se le dió después de que las corporaciones del ferrocarril acabaran con esta colonia a través de la creación del Parque Nacional de Yosemite.
