UConn Dominates DePaul – But What’s Next? 🏀🐺

For the 31st straight time in Big East regular-season play, No. 6 UConn took care of business, defeating DePaul 84-58 on Wednesday night in Chicago. Kaitlyn Chen and Azzi Fudd led the way with 17 points each, while Sarah Strong added 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Huskies (20-2, 11-0 Big East) used dominant 10-0 and 18-2 runs in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

However, leading scorer Paige Bueckers was held to just 8 points, tying her season low, as DePaul’s Taylor Johnson-Matthews stuck to her like glue. But thanks to UConn’s depth and improved offensive balance, the Huskies cruised to their 10th straight victory and 26th straight win over DePaul.

A record-breaking crowd of 8,305 packed Wintrust Arena, setting an attendance record for a Blue Demons women’s game. Despite DePaul’s effort early on—cutting the lead to just three points—UConn’s defense, depth, and superior shooting (12-for-22 from three, 54.5%) proved too much.

🔹 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE WIN 🔹

✔️ UConn’s Depth is Taking Shape – Fudd and Chen stepping up is a great sign, but who else can emerge as a consistent scoring threat?

✔️ Jana El Alfy & Aubrey Griffin’s Impact – With March Madness on the horizon, can these two X-factors solidify UConn’s rotation and add needed versatility?

✔️ Paige Bueckers Held in Check – Is This a Concern? – DePaul locked her down, but should we be worried about teams using similar defensive strategies?

✔️ Dominance in the Big East, But What About the SEC Tests? – The Huskies have rolled through conference play, but matchups against Tennessee and South Carolina loom large.

🔜 What’s Next for UConn?

The Huskies return home to face Butler on Sunday, but the real tests come in their upcoming non-conference showdowns against No. 18 Tennessee and No. 2 South Carolina. These games will serve as measuring sticks—can UConn truly hang with the best teams in the country and build momentum heading into March?

🏀 The SEC Showdowns:

• Tennessee: The Vols are much improved under Kim Caldwell and play an up-tempo, aggressive style. This is a winnable game for UConn, but they must take care of the ball and control the tempo.

• South Carolina: A true test of UConn’s championship pedigree. Despite losing key players, Dawn Staley’s team remains elite, with dominant wins over No. 5 Texas and No. 13 Oklahoma proving their strength. Can UConn stay competitive for 40 minutes and prove they belong among the top-tier teams?

With past losses to No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 4 USC, the Huskies need a statement win against South Carolina to solidify their NCAA Tournament résumé and boost their chances at a No. 1 seed.
