The Freedom Formula for Physicians | How Doctors Cut Debt & Slash Taxes | Business Of Medicine | Financial Education

Nov 27 2020 26 mins 361

My name is Dave Denniston. I started podcasting in 2014 as my way of paying back physicians for helping my family with our miracle child, Evangeline, who was born at a mere 12.4 ounces/ 23 weeks gestationally. Through this journey, I've had the honor of interviewing Dr. Jim Dahle (The White Coat Investor), Dr. Kevin Pho (KevinMD), Dr. Pamela Wible, Dr. Dike Drummond, Dr. Nii Darko, and so many more. This is my personal podcast, dedicated to physicians. It is focused on “financial freedom” and just as importantly, how physicians can engage in healthy & a prosperous mindset! My philosophy is that we can all learn from others and who better to talk to physicians than other physicians and experts in various areas! I want to see every physician lower their taxes, destroy their debt, and enjoy a joyous, liberated lifestyle so that they can focus on what they love most- their families, their patients, and the activities that give them joy. I speak and interview folks on a whole host of issues that are important to physicians- burnout, how to protect their families, divorce, taxes, medical school debt, how to be a blogger & author, how to start an independent practice, and much more. I also occasionally speak about the resources that I am discovering. My goal is to create insightful, relevant content that you can put to work in your personal and professional life. If you are a physician- or aspire to be- then this podcast is for you! I typically post once per week, sometimes more often. Make sure to subscribe and stay tuned. The best is yet to come!

S2, Episode 50-The Secrets To Skyrocket Your Practice with Stephen Woessner
Nov 13 2020 47 mins
Are you frustrated with your stagnant wages? Are you wondering how you can reclaim your time? I’ve been listening to quote a few other podcasts lately. One in particular is focused on dentists. What’s fascinating to me as I listen and learn from these dental entrepreneurs is how much they are focused on having a steady stream of patients that aren’t referrals from other clinicians. I really believe that the most financially successful physicians in the future are going to be those that are less reliant on reimbursements and more reliant on their own brand. From what I’ve seen so far, these physicians seem to have far more control over their time and their financial freedom. So, today, I’d like to empower you with information to help you do this. You my friend are the captain of your ship, in control of your destiny. Our guest today has been focused on digital marketing. As a matter of fact, I am really geeked out because I admire this man. He is the host of Onward Nation podcast. I just love listening to his voice!! He was made for radio. As a matter of fact, I may sound like a squeaky mouse next to his deep, booming, & beautiful voice. Anyhow, even more importantly, he is someone who is authentic and transparent and is a good soul. In a world with a lot of BS, he is someone who brings optimism with a dose of reality. I know because I was honored and privileged to be on his podcast about six months ago and we’ve chatted several times since. He is a friend and a mentor and I am humbled to have him on this podcast. So, let’s dive on in. I know we’re going to learn a ton today. Please help me welcome Stephen Woessner from Predictive ROI. In this podcast, you will discover: How to attract your ideal patient & achieve clarity Discover how a podiatrist has been miserable cutting toe nails & what he can do to break out of that The very first step that you need to take digitally to appeal to your ideal patient Discover Stephen's recipe for success Learn about the short cut of an unpaid intern to turbo boost your platform

S2, Episode 49-My Daughter
Nov 06 2020 20 mins
It was May 13th, 2012. Mother’s Day. My wife, Cyrena, was having an incredibly difficult pregnancy. She had pounding headaches, blurred vision, and searing pain throughout her body. As a matter of fact, she had been in and out of the hospital for the last two weeks. Our tiny daughter was only developed 23 weeks in gestation. Her due date was September 9th, 2012. Unfortunately, my wife had extremely early onset toxemia and preeclampsia. Amid tears, she gripped my hand as we were told, “The blood flow is slowing between mom & your daughter. She is fighting, but she is getting weaker and weaker. In our opinion, she needs to come out, but it’s your choice." With a heavy sigh and two heavy hearts, we agreed with the doctor’s opinion and asked them to proceed. There I was trembling, turning around explaining the situation to my six year-old daughter Gabrielle (we call her Gabby). I got down on one knee. Tears were rolling down my cheeks. I told her, “Gabby, I need you to believe with me. Your sister might not make it today.” Gabby’s eyes got so big. Her eyes started watering. I thought I was going to lose it. Leaving Gabby with a family friend, I then promptly went into the surgery room to be with my wife. I was trembling and gnawing with anxiety. I couldn’t stop pacing. An hour and many prayers later, the doctors were right. Our little tiny baby, barely halfway through the pregnancy process, made it. She survived! Born at nearly 12 oz (a few ounces short of one pound!), she is our miracle baby. We named her Evangeline meaning “bearer of good news”. This was the incredible story that caused me to work with physicians. In this podcast, you will hear me interviewing my oldest daughter Gabby (pictured above at 5 years old). She is now 11 years old and is in 6th grade. It was so inspiring and heart-felt to hear her perspective on this journey and what she went through emotionally. In this podcast, you will discover: How my daughter almost broke down & what the most challenging times in our lives have been What she didn't know about doctors What it is like to live with a financial advisor Learn what you may not know about me (Hint: It involves screaming) For all the show notes, transcription and more, check out the podcast website at http://doctorfreedompodcast.com/

S5, Episode 25- Note Investing with Martin Saenz Author of Note Investing Made Easier: How To Buy And Profit From Distressed Mortgages
Oct 23 2020 45 mins
Every so often we hear from one of our listeners who has a guest suggestion. After I do some vetting, I may or may not invite them to be a guest on the show. Our next guest was suggested by listener Dr. Young An who was kind enough to connect us together. Here's what Dr. An said... "After listening to your recent podcast about mortgage notes as an avenue for passive income, Martin is also a national leader in the mortgage note field. He’s authored several books on the subject, teaches nationwide courses on mortgage note investing, and runs a facebook note investing group with a substantial following. Martin and his principal partner Shawn Muneio have helped me a great deal to diversify my passive income portfolio and actually get into the note business. They also run a note fund which allows busy professionals to more easily diversify into note investing, with a specific mission to help troubled borrowers get back on track AND stay in their homes. I wanted to make a connection with you since they'd be a great resource to add more value for your physician listeners who have become interested in note investing after hearing the podcast." After having some correspondence with Martin, he was kind enough to send a book my way. This book was super-short, but also very helpful. It was enough information for me to start note investing on my own. It convinced me on top of the referral that this was a very good person to be a guest on the show. In all honesty, I don't really need a new shiny object right now with my compressed schedule. However, this business model is very intriguing, but it definitely reminded me a lot of the land business as you'll discover in this interview. For the right physician, this could be an amazing side hustle to supplement their day gig. Martin discussed a lot about his new fund and I kept on trying to steer him back to the business owner side of things, but it was still a very good interview that I hope will inspire you. For the whole podcast, resources, and tons of free stuff, make sure to visit www.doctorfreedompodcast.com May I have your permission to share a struggle that I’ve had? May I have your permission to share something incredibly personal, something private that not many folks know about? It was nearly 4 years ago when my wife and I were going through someincredibly hard times. Evangeline was in the hospital and my oldest daughterwas starving for attention. On top of all of that, I was fat & unhappy. I was grinding through life, taking one moment at a time juggling whatseemed to be a pretty impossible act. At nearly 6’2, I’ve considered myself fairly athletic all my life. Icould pretty much eat and drink whatever the heck I’ve wanted to. I’ve never been the all-star athlete, but I’ve worked pretty darn hardto keep in shape. 180 to 190 pounds is my happy spot. I swore I would never ge tover 200 pounds. With all the stress we were going through pre and post-delivery ofEvangeline, I still worked out, but I was getting older and my metabolism slowing down. Frankly, I let myself go a little bit. I was drinking a couple of sodas aday and consuming all kinds of yummy fatty foods like pizza and fast food with our crazy hectic schedule. I’m about to tell all of you something that I’ve never revealed to anyone except my wife and my oldest daughter. I don’t think I even told my own parents (but I guess they know now)! Although he’s always been interested in personal finance and investing, he really started diving into the field as a resident when he finally got sick of financial professionals ripping him off. In fact, most of his first few encounters with financial professionals ended badly for him. So, that really sucks and I know many of us can relate to that. Unfortunately, doctors are a target. We’ll dive into that later. I know he has a ton of wisdom to share with us and with no further adieu… Please help me welcome Dr. Jim Dahle (pronunciation- DOLL-EE), THE White Coat Investor…. In this podcast, you will discover... Why Jim had virtually no exposure to financial education growing up The moment when he was growing up that provided motivation to be financially successful The financial lessons he is teaching his kids Why debt hasn't played a role in his financial journey and the sacrifice of time he made instead How he built his empire and inspired dozens of physicians to be like him The 3 actions he is taking to drastically lower his income taxes His future plans for more books For the whole podcast, the show notes, resources, and tons of free stuff, make sure to visit the podcast website at www.DoctorFreedomPodcast.com

S2 Episode 41: Save Your Practice by Increasing Your Revenue With Matt Pierce
Apr 24 2020 54 mins
Welcome back to the latest episode of The Freedom Formula for Physicians Podcast. Our guest today has been focused on business development with a healthcare, tech generated focus throughout his whole career. He’s been working in and around physicians for over a decade and has seen what is successful and what is not. Learn why a hospital based physician could (& probably should) utilize a system like this Discover the 3 most important components of physician marketing Learn how PatientPop proactively helps physicians collect reviews that are fantastic & in addition get constructive criticism from pissed off patients [without hurting your rep online] In the BONUS whole unedited interview... [Throwback] S1, Episode 5- General David Hamlar of University of Minnesota- Golden Nuggets for Residents and Fellows
Feb 08 2019 30 mins
This podcast features an interview with Dr. (& General) David Hamlar, MD, DDS, FACS. In this episode, we are going to chat about the unusual path many physicians take, how the profession has changed, and what physicians can do outside of the exam and operating rooms to impact the world. That’s why I decided to invite Brigadier General David D. Hamlar. Brigadier General David D. Hamlar is Assistant Adjutant General – Air, Minnesota National Guard. Besides his wonderful service to our country, he is also a physician, performing craniofacial/skull base surgery and as a professor at the University of Minnesota. [Throwback] S1, Episode 4- Dan Macklin of Sofi- How To Reduce The Burden of Student Debt For Young Physicians
Jan 25 2019 34 mins
This throwback podcast features an interview with Dan Macklin, the co-founder of SoFi. As many of you know who read the Freedom Formula for Physicians, I have a passion for reducing, eliminating, and destroying debt. Practically every single resident or fellow is paying somewhere between 6% and 7% in interest rate. On $200k worth of debt, we’re talking about $13k a year in interest or nearly $1,000 a month. If you think about virtually any loan, like a mortgage or a car loan, if you have a high interest rate today and tomorrow interest rates drop, you could get it refinanced somewhere. Your 6% loan can become a 5% loan. That’s why I thought I’d bring a special guest to the podcast, Dan Macklin. Dan is a co-founder and vice president at SoFi, a leader in marketplace lending with over $2 billion in loans issued. Dan heads the Business Development team, spending a lot of time with SoFi borrowers across the nation. This interview reveals the following: – How you can cut cost of interest of your student loans by 50% or more – When you are NOT able to refinance your loans and when you SHOULDN’T refinance them – How quick and easy it is for you to refinance your loans and what you can do to speed up the process – The two critical difference between fixed and variable loans and how you can change your loans if you change your mind later on. (Hint: It doesn’t cost a single penny!) For the show notes, loads of free resources, and the full transcript, visit the podcast website at www.doctorfredompodcast.com
