80: Ep 80- Trimurti
Nov 11 2020 54 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is not superstitious, but if ever there was a cursed project, it would have to be 1995’s Shahrukh Khan starrer TRIMURTI. A Mukta Arts production directed by Mukul Anand, this movie should have been a slamdunk. Instead, it just dunked on the hosts of this podcast who soon lost the ability to tell what was up and what was down. Possibly the worst film we’ve reviewed on this podcast, Trimurti is unsalvageable in every respect. Co-starring Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Mohan Agashe, and a host of people who would go on to loudly infest other Subhash Ghai films about horrendous families and their wayward children, Episode 80 of the Khandaan is quite a traumatic affair. 78: Ep 78- Baazigar ft @JustinJRao
Oct 28 2020 53 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast dives deep into BAAZIGAR (1993) starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol for its 78th episode. Shilpa Shetty’s debut feature (and what a historic debut it was!), Baazigar is hands down one of the best Abbas Mustan movies ever made. Combining a revenge drama with youthful shenanigans, this is the movie that firmly established SRK’s anti-hero credentials and cemented his storied chemistry with Kajol. With a soundtrack that continues to spell nostalgia for an entire generation, Baazigar is still frequently referenced when discussing Khan’s filmography. We are joined by Justin Rao of PTI as we evaluate whether this is the best Abbas Mustan thriller or, indeed, the best SRK anti-hero thriller. You know him from his offscreen cameos on Saloni Gaur’s Kangana videos (“Shut Up, Justin!”) as well as his excellent Bollywood mashups that beautifully marry images from recent films with older songs. Check out his Twitter (https://twitter.com/JustinJRao) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/justinjrao/?hl=en) for updates and videos. Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast arrives at it’s 76th episode with Sohail Khan’s HELLO BROTHER and Pitu Sultan dancing hand in hand to Chandi ki Daal Par Sone Ka Mor. 74: Ep 74- Dil Chahta Hai
Sep 30 2020 65 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast has taken its time, but we’ve finally arrived at the film that forever changed the Hindi film industry: 2001’s DIL CHAHTA HAI. Farhan Akhtar’s debut feature had a glitzy starcast: Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Preity Zinta, Ayub Khan, Sonali Kulkarni, Suhasini Mulay, and the by-now patented list of talented supporting actors. Everything from the costumes (super trendy at the time), to the dialogues (a stark departure from what the rest of Hindi filmdom sounded like), to cinematography (fresh and natural), to the music (still a bop), left an impact. It changed the trajectory of several careers and gave others an opportunity to showcase their talents in a way few Hindu films have been able to. Join us for a nostalgic deep dive into shared joys and surprising traumas. Requested by Matt and Erin, 2013’s Dhoom 3 stars Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Jackie Shroff in a brief appearance. It has the distinction of being the first Bollywood film Matt and Erin watched onscreen and it left a huge impact. We discuss what worked and what didn’t, the “homage” to Christopher Nolan, the varying degrees of performance, why Katrina is a worthy successor to Helen (hallowed be her name), and how does it feel in 2020 to watch a movie about defending a bank. 70: Ep 70- Love ft @Get_Filmy
Aug 27 2020 110 mins
Episode 70 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast takes us back to our roots… and boy, is it a trip! Our feature of the day is the 1991 South-remake LOVE, starring Salman Khan, Revathi, Rita Bhaduri, Shafi Inamdar, and sadly enough, Amjad Khan. This topnotch pick comes courtesy an old friend of the podcast and shy netizen Shakeela aka @Get_Filmy (https://twitter.com/get_filmy) whom you should follow on Twitter for some absolutely scorching Bolly takes. Love is a complicated film whose sole purpose appears to be to beg the question WHY? Why... do people forget that Salman has consistently done South remakes throughout his career instead of it being a career saving ploy in the 2000s? Why... is Salman so beautiful in this film? Why… is Revathi his best co-star? Why… does everything escalate in two seconds? Why… does all Bombay know Salman’s scandalous past? Why… is Salman a musician? Why… did Shakeela do this to us? And other burning questions. A Short Timeline: · 02:30 A small eulogy to the Twitter that was · 07.45 Asim and Sujoy talk about what they watched on Zee 5’s new streaming platform · 17.25 Asim Abbasi’s CHURAILS on ZEE5 has our very own Asim pretty chuffed (spoiler free) · 32.50CLASS OF 83 on Netflix reminds us that we’re none of us Boobians :/ · 39.30 We nearly forgot GUNJAN SAXENA: THE KARGIL GIRL on Netflix but it’s not half as bad as some make it out to be? Maybe? · 49.20 SADAK 2 has a trailer out and it’s leaving quite a trail of hate in its wake · 57.50 THE MAIN REVIEW: Falling in LOVE with Bhai ke muscles. Episode 69 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast brings you everyone’s favorite (or is it?) Bollywood sports movie: 2007’s CHAKE DE! INDIA. Directed by Shimit Amin, a less than prolific director of tremendous talent, this underdog Shahrukh Khan starrer surprised everyone by not only succeeding at the box office but also becoming a perennial fan favorite. In fact, it was the only choice for our guest, Sucharita Tyagi (https://twitter.com/Su4ita) , whom you may know from Film Companion (https://www.youtube.com/user/TheFIlmCompanion) ’s Not a Movie Review series or her own eponymous channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/sucharitatyagi) . Jul 29 2020 75 mins
Our very last CoronaCast episode before our return to the regular schedule has us catching up after nearly a month. In the meantime, Sujoy and Amrita collaborated with Beth from Beth Loves Bollywood for the Tolly Folly Podcast (https://audioboom.com/channel/upodcast--bollywood-edition) a limited series about the classic Bengali movies of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. In between all the movies Sujoy was watching for Tolly Folly, he also caught up with the hit series KILLING EVE and watched Luc Besson’s ANNA as palate cleansers. Amrita, meanwhile, caught up with various Turkish dramas on the recommendation of none other than Cardi B: THE MAGNIFICENT CENTURY and ERTUGRUL. Asim was busing enjoying his mother’s cooking but took breaks to watch BREATHE with Abhishek Bachchan and THE OLD GUARD with Charlize Theron. Finally, we all watched or at least attempted to watch DIL BECHARA, the last movie made by Sushant Singh Rajput before his untimely demise. Jul 09 2020 110 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is back for Episode 67 with Salman Khan’s DABANGG! Directed by Abhinav Kashyap, this 2010 movie co-starred Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan and introduced Sonakshi Sinha. For various unfortunate reasons, however, this movie has been back in the public eye of late - so we invited ace film critic and journalist Anna Vetticad (https://twitter.com/annavetticad) (visit her site here (http://annavetticadgoes2themovies.blogspot.com/) ) to discuss recent developments. Anna is also an author and has written *the* definitive deep dive into Salman Khan in addition to THE ADVENTURES OF AN INTREPID FILM CRITIC (available everywhere books are sold). Join us as we make our way through some messy times in Hindi cinema and discuss the phenomenon called Salman Khan. 64: Sushant Singh Rajput, Gulabo Sitabo and Axone
Jun 18 2020 63 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is back to the CoronaCast with Episode 64. Unfortunately, this episode was recorded just as news broke about Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic passing, so while we do mention it, we’ll have a more in-depth discussion of the fallout in our next episode. The news also cast a pall over the episode but… you know, sometimes you just try your best to keep your head above water. Hopefully, that’s what this episode helps you do as well. Other topics of discussion included: Asim and Sujoy watched GULABO SITABO, the new Ayushman Khurana - Amitabh Bachchan movie that premiered on Prime. There were Thoughts about it. Sujoy recommends AXONE, a wholesome new movie on Netflix about life as it is lived by those from the Northeast in other parts of India, specifically Delhi. Amrita watched WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING and its Malayalam remake CHANDRALEKHA for another episode of The Other Banana podcast. She’ll post a link on Twitter if you want to hear her thoughts on them. And finally, Asim shares his impression of KIREEDAM, the Malayalam original of his favorite Jackie Shroff movie, GARDISH. (By the way, for those of you wondering, the name of the actor who plays Mohanlal’s father in Kireedam is Thilakan and he and Mohanlal made a legendary pairing in Malayalam cinema, so props to Asim for picking up on that.) Once again, as this is a CoronaCast episode, we wander all over the place and don’t have a timeline for you. Join us next week for more shenanigans, slightly happier news and the mother of all Aamir movies, LAGAAN. 63: Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Choked and Chintu Ka Birthday ft. Aditya Shrikrishna
Jun 10 2020 106 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast’s 63rd episode proves to be the charm with Shahrukh Khan’s iconic KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA (1994). If “wholesome" was a movie, it would be this film by Kundan Shah. Reportedly SRK’s own favorite out of his many films, this is a film that has stood the test of time. Joining us for the episode is Aditya from The Other Banana podcast (http://www.whereistheotherbanana.com/) aka @gradwolf (https://twitter.com/gradwolf) on Twitter. A short timeline of topics: 03.35 Aditya has watched the now defunct AIB's first production - Chintu Ka Birthday 15.00 Silverscreen.in published *the* definitive article (https://silverscreenindia.com/music/features/vairamuthus-accusers-on-the-poet-and-his-predatory-ways/) on Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu’s #MeToo allegations and it’s a real doozy 23.05 Sujoy and Aditya watched Anurag Kashyap’s CHOKED and have decided he must be saved from himself 31.31 HuffPost India did an Abhay Deol retrospective (https://www.huffingtonpost.in/entry/abhay-deol-interview_in_5eda5698c5b647aac9a96906?z77) and it was unintentional top comedy 48.47 The Main Review: KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA Follow and subscribe to Amrita's new Youtube Book channel by going here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmyb1ZvLmaDLBsen6QQrO4A) ! 62: Ep 62- Kaamyaab, Betaal and Jackie Shroff - Khandaan Ko Rona Aa Gaye
Jun 04 2020 76 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is now on it’s 62nd episode… and we’re once again doing a Corona round up. For those of you struggling with all the current events in the world and need a break, we suggest you skip the first 10 minutes because we’re not in the best of moods to be honest. However! We soon move on to discussing the latest Red Chillies Production for Netflix: BETAAL. Sujoy is happy to report that it continues a long and proud Red Chillies tradition by being absolutely mediocre. Asim broke character to watch KAMYAAB, another Red Chillies effort for Netflix that isn’t entirely awful. It is definitely the better reviewed project of the two. After that gargantuan effort, Asim needed a little cheering up so he obviously looked up KAALA BAZAAR (1989), starring Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. This is a segue onto our discussion about Jackie, an actor whose work we grew up watching but never discuss for some reason. Do let us know your favorite Jackie movies. And to round everything off, we discuss a recent article in Bollywood Hungama wherein single screen owners complain about the lack of massy content from Bollywood and the artistic ambitions of its most reliable performers. We don’t have a timeline for you as these special episodes go back and forth, but join us next week for our regular programming! 61: Pardes ft. @maplebrownie
May 28 2020 93 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast sails on to its 61st episode with Shahrukh Khan’s PARDES (1997). This patriotic ode to a visually composite India was directed by Subhash Ghai, his last big hit, and stars debutants Mahima Chaudhary and Apoorva Agnihotri in addition to Amrish Puri, Alok Nath, and a full team of people whose faces you will recognize. Shot across North America, which stood in for Hollywood (?), PARDES is the story of a rich NRI who seeks a village belle wife for his spoiled young son… and the foster son who eventually wins the bride. A movie 20 years too late for its time, we discuss this hate crime against NRIs and why it was made. Friend of the podcast Nim (@maplebrownie (https://twitter.com/MapleBrownie) on Twitter and Instagram) joins us to explain why she decided to entrust a precious memory of her childhood to Khandaan of all people. A short timeline of topics: 04.42 The GULABO SITABO trailer and we are not the audience for it 12.51 Nim is curious about Abhay Deol's WHAT ARE THE ODDS releasing on Netflix 19.34 Mithun is launching his younger son Nimashe 24.55 The Main Review: PARDES Follow and subscribe to Amrita's new Youtube Book channel by going here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmyb1ZvLmaDLBsen6QQrO4A) ! 59: Remembering Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan ft. Aneela Babar
May 07 2020 85 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast brings in episode 59 in the wake of one of the saddest weeks in Hindi film history: when we lost two towering stars, Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor. [Note: this episode is mainly in English mixed with Urdu/Hindi and a little bit of Pashto.] How do we address the passing of two men, gone before their time, who meant so much to us as film-lovers? They came from two separate generations of acting talent even though they were barely a dozen years apart in age; they defined very different kinds of cinema even though they both made sorties into each other’s territory from time to time. Rishi appeared onscreen for the first time at age two, in the most iconic song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXLzfldeDcM) in Hindi cinema; by the time he was 18, he was a bonafide star. In his own words, he was born lucky and stayed lucky… until his luck ran out. Irrfan fought for every scrap of success; from that time he cruelly lost out on SALAAM BOMBAY to the day he bowled the world over in THE NAMESAKE. Here is a man who forsook his own lineage and didn’t worry about his legacy because everything he wanted was in the present. Our love for these men’s work is reflected in our attitudes towards them while they were still alive. Rishi, the star, was always in the public eye: cosseted, reviled, retweeted. Irrfan, the actor, sparked intense scrutiny every time he came on film and then somehow just slipped away when he wasn’t onstage, so to speak; no mean feat in these times of intense media interest. When news broke about Irrfan, we were stunned to realize how much we loved him. When we learned of Rishi, we struggled with our feelings of love and anger, as thought we’d lost a member of our family. The dead don’t care for our feelings. They now live in a world beyond our recriminations or love. Yet, we who are left behind cannot help but discuss them and how we feel about them. We are joined by Aneela Babar (friend, true blue cinephile, and author of WE ARE ALL REVOLUTIONARIES HERE (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35077494-we-are-all-revolutionaries-here) ) for this very special episode. 58: Duplicate ft @BethLovesBolly
May 01 2020 97 mins
Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is back with Top Friend Beth from Beth Loves Bollywood (http://www.bethlovesbollywood.com/) to discuss 1998’s Shahrukh Khan double-header DUPLICATE. Allegedly directed by Mahesh Bhatt, DUPLICATE was the first double role for SRK and he really put in the effort - but was it worth it? Beth finds herself in the unique position of having more nostalgia for a film than the other three for once. Co-starring a radiant Juhi Chawla, an inept and badly sabotaged Sonali Bendre, a friendzoned Mohnish Behl. a loud Farida Jalal, and the cheapest villain’s lair ever seen on film, DUPLICATE gave us a lot to discuss. Join us as we put more thought into the discussion of this film than Mahesh Bhatt did to its direction and find out for once and for all just how much Asim loves Salman. A short timeline: 00.11.02 Beth is watching I, CLAUDIUS for (another) podcast joke purposes and rewatching COMMUNITY and recommends y’all do so as well. 00.23.10 Sujoy watched the Chris Hemsworth Netflix action movie, EXTRACTION. 00.26.45 Amrita has seen some stuff but she doesn’t remember any of it, so never mind. She recommends you watch Bon Appetit. 00.33.55 Asim is rewatching THE WIRE. 00.40.32 The Main Review: DUPLICATE. Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is back with another Corona Cast for those of you who’re stuck at home and would like to hear other people’s voices. We are joined this episode by Suchin Mehrotra of Film Companion (https://www.filmcompanion.in/author/suchin-mehrotra/) fame. If you’ve been following his show on YouTube, you know Suchin is the man you want to talk to regarding streaming content during this time. The resulting conversation was rather too long and looped back and forth quite a bit, so we don’t have a timeline for you, but we do have a list of topics we discussed: - Muskurayega India - absolutely unintended hilarity from Bollywood - Suchin has many thoughts on the Raikar Case on Voot - Tales from the Loop - Asim is watching Bosch, and he is the only one in the entire universe - Indian Comedy on Amazon Prime: but why? - Pushpavalli - Operation MBBS - Asim is now an expert on Yo Yo Honey Singh - Dax Shepherd and the male obsession with male bodies (this makes more sense when you hear it, I swear) Link (https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/armchair-expert-with-dax-shepard/id1345682353?i=1000467850510) - Family: the best Bollywood content to have come out during the plague? - Say Yes to the Dress UK: Curvy Bride Boutique - Bong Eats on YouTube featuring some (well deserved) humble bragging from Asim - The Wine Show with Mathew Goode and Matthew Rhys / Travel Man with Richard Ayoade / James May: Our Man in Japan - DIY videos: The Weekender on YouTube - Sujoy saw Cake, a movie from Pakistan - Ronin / Avengers / Shadow - Sujoy recommends we all rewatch Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies - Kim’s Convenience - Schitt’s Creek - Maqbool - Tiger King - Money Heist Shownotes: You can Follow Suchin on Twitter (https://twitter.com/suchin545) or his blog (http://magicofbollywood.com/) Link to the Chinese Youtube Cooking Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJJDD-Hy76jvUMRG-dpFkcw) Asim mentioned Our interview with Asim Abbasi (https://audioboom.com/posts/6742979-ep-235-making-bollywood-replica-s-won-t-get-us-anywhere-asim-abbasi-talks-cake) , the director of Cake Find us on Apple Podcasts (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-khandaan-podcast/id1362881501) ! and Stitcher (http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/upodcast/khandaan-podcast%3Frefid=stpr) ! and AudioBoom (https://audioboom.com/channels/4944450.rss) ! and iHeartRadio (http://www.iheart.com/podcast/270-The-Khandaan-Podcast-29185125) ! and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/3bZLrLZHCuLDmJzgm9MPm0) ! and Google Podcasts (https://www.google.com/podcasts%3Ffeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hdWRpb2Jvb20uY29tL2NoYW5uZWxzLzQ5NDQ0NTAucnNz) ! 55: Mela ft. Pitu Sultan
Apr 08 2020 75 mins
Episode 55 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is takes us back to regular programming with 2000’s (!) MELA starring Aamir Khan, Twinkle Khanna, Faisal Khan, and the regular acting troupe of director Dharmesh Darshan. This megaflop from the turn of the century is something of a niche classic featuring tropes we haven’t seen in A-list Bollywood since the 1980s. A fitting welcome to our brand new, plague-ridden century. Episode 53 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is your refuge from the monotony of lockdown, wherever you might be experiencing it. Top Friend Beth (http://www.bethlovesbollywood.com/?m=0) rejoins us for the second dose of bitter medicine as Sujoy chooses his winner for the FilmFare challenge: 1991’s SAAJAN starring Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Madhuri Dixit with Reema Laagoo, Kader Khan, Laxmikant Berde and others. 49: PK, Street Dancer 3D and The Forgotten Army
Jan 29 2020 89 mins
Episode 49 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is where we discuss one of the most controversial movies to be made in the past 10 years: Rajkumar Hirani’s PK. Released in 2014, this movie stars Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput and others in the story of an alien who is left stranded on earth when he encounters the lying, thieving, deceitful humans who populate it. Infused with the trademark Hirani touch, Asim feels the role of a goofy alien might be Aamir’s best performance yet but Sujoy and Amrita have thoughts about this bold assertion. We discuss whether this movie could be made today, the limits of artistic expression, and the similarities and differences between this and OMG, another film about religion that many in our audience seem to prefer. A Short Timeline · 0.54 A Street Dancer 3D review by Sujoy, the target audience for this film · 13.30 Love Aaj Kal 2020: a trailer that made Asim slowly fall in love with Aartik Karyan · 21.15 Jawani Jaaneman and what’s the deal with Saif · 37.10 Kabir Khan’s The Forgotten Army on Amazon Prime and should it have remained forgotten · 46.09 The Main Review: PK Shownotes: KRK’s Street Dancer review can be found here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5fQ6h3xdf4) Saif Ali Khan’s interview with Film Companion can be found here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wylUixDml4) Find us on Apple Podcasts (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-khandaan-podcast/id1362881501) ! and Stitcher (http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/upodcast/khandaan-podcast%3Frefid=stpr) ! and AudioBoom (https://audioboom.com/channels/4944450.rss) ! and iHeartRadio (http://www.iheart.com/podcast/270-The-Khandaan-Podcast-29185125) ! and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/3bZLrLZHCuLDmJzgm9MPm0) ! and Google Podcasts (https://www.google.com/podcasts%3Ffeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hdWRpb2Jvb20uY29tL2NoYW5uZWxzLzQ5NDQ0NTAucnNz) ! Episode 47 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is the first of our “Produced by YashRaj” series, 2008’s Shahrukh Khan-starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. This rare Aditya Chopra directorial outing and Anushka Sharma’s debut feature is a fairly controversial choice - more than a decade after its release it continues divide opinions. Those that love this film, think it sinned against; those who hated it when it came out haven’t seen much reason to change their minds. We are joined on the podcast by Stacey Yount (https://twitter.com/Bollywriter) who is the Editor in Chief of Bollyspice (https://bollyspice.com/) . 46: Biwi no 1, Drive review and Panipat Trailer
Nov 13 2019 94 mins
Episode 46 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast features our first Salman Khan - David Dhawan collaboration. Coasting on nostalgia, the audience selected 1999’s Biwi No. 1, a film we had all mostly forgotten. Co-starring Karisma Kapoor as the titular biwi (maybe? the climax left us confused), Sushmita Sen as the other woman, Anil Kapoor as the best friend, and Tabu as his totally unnecessary wife, this remake of a Kamal Haasan film drips South Indian tropes that were already outdated by the 80s, struggle to make sense in the 90s, and are definitely unbearable in 2019. The music is still amazing, though! A Short Timeline: 02.21 Asim talks about Drive, a movie Sujoy couldn’t finish and Amrita refuses to watch 6.44 Panipat and Asim’s theory of the "jingorical" 22.04 The controversy around the Patni, Pati Aur Woh trailer and the mystery of Kartik Aryan's appeal 33.34 The Main Review: Biwi No. 1 Shownotes: You can find Anna MM Vetticad (https://www.firstpost.com/author/annavetticad) 's interview with the director of Saandh Ki Aankh, Tushar Hiranandi by clicking here (https://www.firstpost.com/entertainment/bollywood/tushar-hiranandani-on-bhumi-taapsee-and-ageism-saand-ki-aankhs-shashi-kapoor-connect-misogyny-and-why-he-wont-do-another-masti-7609651.html) You can also vote on our next poll "Which Khan collaboration with Yash Raj Films do you want us to discuss?" by heading here (https://www.opinionstage.com/asimburney/which-khan-collaboration-with-yash-raj-films-do-you-want-us-to-discuss-on-the-next-khandaanpodcast) Find us on Apple Podcasts (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-khandaan-podcast/id1362881501) ! and Stitcher (http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/upodcast/khandaan-podcast%3Frefid=stpr) ! and AudioBoom (https://audioboom.com/channels/4944450.rss) ! and iHeartRadio (http://www.iheart.com/podcast/270-The-Khandaan-Podcast-29185125) ! and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/3bZLrLZHCuLDmJzgm9MPm0) ! and Google Podcasts (https://www.google.com/podcasts%3Ffeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hdWRpb2Jvb20uY29tL2NoYW5uZWxzLzQ5NDQ0NTAucnNz) ! Episode 45 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is a blast from the past - specifically, Aamir Khan’s past. Tum Mere Ho (1990), directed by Tahir Hussain a.k.a. The Aamir Dad has everything: a wronged and vengeful snake mom, a grubby dad, a lost heir, a damsel beset by zaalim samaaj, intense young love, unique tribal customs, terrible costumes, and a fuzzy timeline that ensures we’re never quite sure when all of this action is taking place. Co-starring the always delightful Juhi Chawla and a thoroughly awkward Kalpana Iyer as a snake with tragic fashion sense, Tum Mere Ho is a classic for all the best reasons as previously outlined by Pretentious Movie Reviews (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0n7OWo4Sr6U) . We are joined by ace friend of the blog, Pitu Sultan, who has recently launched a fun new Instagram vlog called KAPOW with Pitu (https://www.instagram.com/kapow_with_pitu/?hl=en) which is also available on YouTube (https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCbKYeMoOrfBpXKCEzRYft2g/videos) . Subscribe today! (Or just click on the links, the video thumbnails alone are worth your clicks!) A Short Timeline: 01.15 Asim and Sujoy watched Baahubali at the Royal Albert Hall with a live orchestra and it was magical. 11.50 Channel 4 in the UK has an interesting line up of films for you to watch and top friend Beth (https://twitter.com/bethlovesbolly) is back to give the lowdown on one of the films: Satyajit Ray’s Kapurush. 17.50 Asim can live again as Dabangg 3 gears for release. 23.50 Obviously Asim is a huge Vidyut Jammwal fan and a Pitu tangent about the career of Neil Nitin Mukesh 32.05 The Main Review: Tum Mere Ho Shownotes: Details about Channel 4's Indian Movie Season can be found here (https://www.channel4.com/press/news/channel-4-indian-film-season-2019) Follow Sujoy's instagram which also has shots of Baahubali Live at the Royal Albert Hall which can be found here (https://www.instagram.com/9e3k/) Find us on Apple Podcasts (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-khandaan-podcast/id1362881501) ! and Stitcher (http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/upodcast/khandaan-podcast%3Frefid=stpr) ! and AudioBoom (https://audioboom.com/channels/4944450.rss) ! and iHeartRadio (http://www.iheart.com/podcast/270-The-Khandaan-Podcast-29185125) ! and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/3bZLrLZHCuLDmJzgm9MPm0) ! and Google Podcasts (https://www.google.com/podcasts%3Ffeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hdWRpb2Jvb20uY29tL2NoYW5uZWxzLzQ5NDQ0NTAucnNz) ! 44: War, The Family Man and Bard Of Blood ft @BethLovesBolly
Oct 08 2019 125 mins
Extra Special: WAR, The Family Man, Bard of Blood Episode 44 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is all about WAR, starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. This departure from our Khan focus is due to a number of factors, including the absence of co-host Sujoy, but we wanted y’all to have an episode to tide you over! Director Siddharth Anand re-unites with Hrithik after the Knight and Day remake Bang Bang, which was all about the chemistry between Hrithik and Katrina Kaif. This time, Hrithik is paired with Tiger, and the screen is nearly set ablaze with their chemistry. And it truly is chemistry unlike anything we’ve seen in Bollywood before. Top friend Beth Watkins from BethLovesBollywood (http://www.bethlovesbollywood.com/) joins us to discuss and many laughs are had. Please note: this begins as a spoiler free review but eventually goes (heavily) into spoilers as timestamped below. A Short Timeline: 02.50 Khoon Bhari Maang (1988) because Asim promised Beth he would watch it and ek baar jo Asim ne commitment de di, he’ll do it even if it takes him a whole year and his eyeballs bleed. 12.40 We start out with the Housefull 4 trailer which makes us wonder about the Deol’s life choices. 18.28 Marjaavan is the next Siddharth Malhotra film and it basically arrived in a freezer is how cold Sid’s career is right now 26.25 Drive is the famously troubled Sushant Singh Rajput / Jacqueline Fernandez movie that Dharma just dumped on Netflix and here is the interview (https://www.huffingtonpost.in/entry/sushant-singh-rajput-interview_in_5d8ef27ae4b0ac3cdda8ffbb) Amrita mentions in the episode 33.06 Laal Kaptaan had three unique trailers out and it finally gave Asim a glimpse of what excites Amrita about this film; here is the interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eEjMW-PHPg) we mention in the episode 43.00 Mardaani 2 brings up the fun fact that Beth has written an academic chapter on the first movie (!) and we are looking forward to this one 46.15 The Family Man vs. Bard of Blood reveals that we have a definite favorite 1.00.54 The Main Review: WAR 1.13.05 WAR with spoilers Shownotes: Anupama Chopra’s Laal Kaptaan Interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eEjMW-PHPg&authuser=0) with Saif Ali Khan and Navdeep Singh Sujoy’s thread about WAR (https://twitter.com/9e3k/status/1180128773657657344?s=20) You can enter the YRF's "War Give Away" by dropping us an email on [email protected] (mailto:%[email protected]) and letting us know if you are #TeamTiger or #TeamHritik extra points if you send us a screenshot of the iTunes review you have written for us. 43: Dream Girl, Chhichhore and Fan
Sep 23 2019 113 mins
Episode 43 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is all about FAN (2016). We also discuss the recent movie releases, Chhichore and Dream Girl; new streaming shows Mission Over Mars on AltBalaji and The Family Man on Amazon Prime; plus new trailers for The Sky is Pink and The Zoya Factor. Director Maneesh Sharma’s FAN stars Shahrukh Khan in a double role as superstar Aryan Khanna and his crazed fan Gaurav who unleashes a wave of terror on the object of his love when he is unable to establish the emotional connect he craves from his beloved. There is an interesting cast of secondary characters in this movie but it lives and dies on SRK alone. Join us as we discuss this deeply polarizing movie and where it went wrong but also what it got right. Show Notes: 03.57 Chhichore, starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead, directed by Nitesh Tiwari - a film about college that feels like homework 11.16 Dream Girl starring Ayushman Khurana and Nusrat Bharucha is more of a nightmare albeit a funny one 22.15 Updates on the AltBalaji discussion from the last episode with a review of Mission Over Mars 38.00 The Zoya Factor starring Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Dulquer Salmaan is drearily coasting off a very bad, low energy trailer 43.02 The Sky is Pink costars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Farhan Akhtar and might be worth a watch maybe 48.15 The Main Review: FAN Show notes: Amazon Prime’s The Family Man stars Manoj Bajpayee and you can check out Asim’s interview with the director Raj from Raj and DK here (https://audioboom.com/posts/7377646-we-re-not-judging-people-or-interested-in-vilifying-communities-raj-nidimoru-talks-the-family) . 42: Sacred Games S2 and Hum Aapke Hain Koun ft Suchin Mehrotra
Aug 29 2019 141 mins
Episode 42 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is a celebration of 25 years of Hum Aapke Hain Koun…, arguably the most influential film to emerge from Bollywood in the 1990s. Director Sooraj Barjatya’s sophomore effort, 1994’s HAHK instantly cemented the careers of Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Barjatya himself as legends of Hindi cinema. It also cast Renuka Shahane as our collective bhabhi and changed the career of Mohnish Behl while introducing us to the star that is Tuffy. Join us as we discuss the many iconic moments (onscreen and offscreen) of this film as well as its songs, which are still familiar to audiences all these years later, with ace friend of the podcast, Suchin Mehrotra (https://twitter.com/suchin545) . 41: Typewriter S1 and Koyla ft Pitu Sultan
Aug 16 2019 97 mins
Episode 41 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is all about 1997’s Koyla, a movie no one, absolutely no one was asking for except for our featured guest, the beloved, the one-and-only, the hilarious Pitu Sultan! Directed by Rakesh Roshan, who clearly needed to work some serious kinks out of his system, this movie stars Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever, Ashok Saraf and every single Bollywood baddie working in 90s Hindi cinema. It’s a gory, musical mess and we have lots to discuss about it. 40: Sarfarosh, War, Mission Mangal and Aryan Khan
Jul 29 2019 80 mins
Episode 40 of Khandaan - A Bollywood Podcast brings you John Matthew Matthan’s seminal Sarfarosh (1999), starring Aamir Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Sonali Bendre, Mukesh Rishi and others. For our “Cops” theme, readers voted for the movie that made a real impact on the genre in Bollywood when it landed. Sarfarosh is a taut game of cat and mouse between characters who have revealed all to the audience but remain hidden from each other within the movie. It’s a very effective narrative as we discuss at length. A short timeline: 03.10: The Liong King (Hindi) and the launch of Aryan Khan 12.05 The War teaser with Hrithik and Tiger 20.30 The Mission Mangal trailer 26.45 The Main Review: Sarfarosh (1999) Find us on Apple Podcasts (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-khandaan-podcast/id1362881501) ! and Stitcher (http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/upodcast/khandaan-podcast%3Frefid=stpr) ! and AudioBoom (https://audioboom.com/channels/4944450.rss) ! and iHeartRadio (http://www.iheart.com/podcast/270-The-Khandaan-Podcast-29185125) ! and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/3bZLrLZHCuLDmJzgm9MPm0) ! and Google Podcasts (https://www.google.com/podcasts%3Ffeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hdWRpb2Jvb20uY29tL2NoYW5uZWxzLzQ5NDQ0NTAucnNz) ! 39: Phir Bhi Hai Hindustani plus Saaho an Judgementall Hai Kya ft. Anuj Radia
Jul 16 2019 91 mins
Episode 39 came as a bit of a surprise - we didn’t expect so many people would be interested in the Dreamz Unlimited movie Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. Directed by Aziz Mirza who had previously found a great deal of success with the starring duo of Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, this film from the year 2000 was oddly prescient about the direction and corruption of cable news shows in the 21st century as they hunt for ratings and get cozy with political power. Featuring a bravura performance by the luminous Juhi Chawla and a by-turns-charming-and-creepy Shahrukh, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani was a high profile dud on arrival but there was quite a lot for us to discuss. We are joined this week by Anuj Radia of FilmeShilmy (https://filmeshilmy.com/author/anujradia/) to cover this and a host of other subjects in a very busy week for Hindi cinema. You can add your vote for our next themed Khandaan Poll which is COPS by going here (https://www.opinionstage.com/asimburney/which-khan-cop-movie-do-you-want-us-to-talk-about-on-the-next-khandaanpodcast) . 38: Asoka, Kabir Singh, Yesterday
Jul 03 2019 72 mins
Welcome to Episode 38 of the Khandaan podcast where we discuss 2001’s Shahrukh Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer, Asoka. Directed by Santosh Sivan, this movie handily won our poll of the week - a nod to its cult status today compared to the flop it was on arrival. Co-starring some really intriguing and talented actors we don’t often see onscreen, this SRK home production remains a visual treat but how does it fare narratively at close to 3 hours of runtime? 37: Ep 37- Bharat, Chopsticks, Saaho, Super 30
Jun 18 2019 96 mins
In Episode 37 of the Khandaan podcast, we discuss a new Khan movie - 2019’s Salman Khan-on-Eid release, Bharat. This movie hit the headlines even before it went into production when Priyanka Chopra, the original lead actress, chose to leave the film on the eve of shooting for vague reasons that eventually resolved into her getting married to Nick Jonas. However, this was pretty much the only interesting thing that happened to this film as we discuss during the podcast. Co-starring Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani (whose name we learn to pronounce from Asim of all people), Jackie Shroff, and Tabu, among other talented actors, this movie by reliable helmer Ali Abbas Zafar stands on the cusp of something good and interesting… and then backs away slowly. We compare Bharat to its Korean original and discuss some of other content we have consumed over the past couple of weeks such as Netflix’s Chopsticks and things we plan to consume when it comes out like the next Prabhas-starrer Saaho. We also have a new poll for the next episode and the theme is historical. Or should we say “historical”? You can vote by clicking here (https://www.opinionstage.com/asimburney/which-khan-historical-do-you-want-us-to-talk-about-on-the-next-khandaanpodcast) . This week we make a deep delve into the past with 1995’s Rangeela, starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar and Jackie Shroff. Directed by Ram Gopal Verma, Rangeela was a relaunch for Urmila, who had already had an extensive career as a child actor but was struggling to make the leap to adult dramas the way so many child actors do. Rather unwittingly, it was also a departure for star Aamir whose commendable performance here is different from anything he had done before. This movie is also notable for its music by AR Rahman, which was a sensation when it released and is seemingly ageless. This was a very happy trip into the past for the three hosts who have lots of personal anecdotes to share as well as a new appreciation for the strengths of this film. We also discussed the London Indian Film Festival or the LIFF, which is going on right now. Tickets are still available and this might be your chance to see some seriously good cinema. Sujoy and Asim had some contrarian thoughts about Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, a movie currently playing on Netflix but which has had a significant presence on the festival circuit, including LIFF. We also discuss the trailer for the new Ayushman Khurrana movie Article 15 - and how Asim and Amrita are sadly not in the best mental or emotional space for it. A Timeline: 0.55 The problem with Article 15 3.12 The line up at LIFF 8.00 Thoughts on Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota 20.02 Rangeela Our next episode will feature the Annual Salman Eid Release (this year it’s Bharat), so remember to tune in next time! 35: Ep 35- Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge ft @BethLovesBollywood
May 21 2019 135 mins
Episode 35 of the Khandaan podcast features our return from a much-needed break, so you know we’ve got something big for you - yes, it’s 1995’s monster hit, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge! Aditya Chopra’s debut film changed Hindi cinema in ways that still influence filmmaking across South Asia today and turned Shahrukh Khan into a superstar. Co-starring Kajol, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Satish Shah, Parmeet Sethi, Mandira Bedi and Himani Shivpuri in addition to a baby Karan Johar, DDLJ was a sensation when it released. We are joined once again by Top Friend Beth of BethLovesBollywood (http://twitter.com/bethlovesbolly) fame to explore how well this movie has stood up to the ravages of time and its unique position in Bollywood history. We also do a small catch up on things that happened while we were away. A Timeline: 4.15 Sujoy's quick review of Student of the Year 2 starring Tiger Shroff, Ananya Pandey, and Tara Sutaria 10.42 Kalank's box office made Varun Dhawan want to get kicked in the face and the state of Dharma Studios 19.15 Main Review: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Aditya Chopra studio head vs director DDLJ's legacy A gift and a curse for SRK Voting is now open for our next episode. 34: Ep 34- Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham ft Ruchi
Apr 26 2019 137 mins
Episode 34 of the Khandaan podcast is here for one last hurrah before we go on a short break for the month of April. Our special feature is 2001’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Directed by Karan Johar, this is an old fashioned mega starrer of the kind rarely seen these days - with Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor (Khan), Johnny Lever, Farida Jalal, Sushma Seth, Achala Sachdev, and a special appearance by Rani Mukherjee. We threw open our Curious Cat (https://curiouscat.me/khandaan) once again for this episode because we knew you would all have tons to say and ask about this movie and we were correct! It’s clearly not as much of a favorite as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai but it has definitely established itself as a fan favorite over the years, especially on the internet where it has a cult following - if something this big and successful could be called a cult film. We are joined for this episode by our friend Ruchi (https://twitter.com/ruchi18) who definitely had a lot to say. This episode is being released with some quick thoughts on Sonchirya, Lukka Chuppi and Made In Heaven(although you can hear us discuss Made in Heaven with Ruchi here) but for the rest it's a giant episode for a giant film. Please point and laugh at all those weeping at the thought of a three-hour Avengers film. 32: Ep 32- Kalank Teaser, Badla and Ishq ft Haroon Rashid
Mar 22 2019 97 mins
Episode 32 of the Khandaan podcast brings to you the results of your vote - or that of dedicated Aamir bots, you be the judge - 1997’s Ishq, starring Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla, Kajol and Ajay Devgan with Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Dalip Tahil, Johnny Lever, Tiku Talsania, and Mohan Joshi in key roles. Directed by Indra Kumar, Ishq was a massive success when it came out, despite a chaotic production schedule that effectively destroyed the Aamir-Juhi pairing forever. To discuss this film, we’re joined once more by Haroon Rashid of the BBC (https://twitter.com/iHaroonRashid) , who has always maintained that Ishq is his all-time favorite Bollywood film. Although we did our best to ruin it for him, he ran the gauntlet and emerged more or less unscathed. A Timeline: 05.00 The Kalank teaser and the reign of Alia Bhatt 17.30 Sujoy watched Badla 29.30 Haroon also watched Luka Chuppi 37.30 Haroon watched Made in Heaven (with spoiler from 42.00) 53.30 The Main Event: Ishq Shownotes: Vote for our next episode by clicking here (https://www.opinionstage.com/asimburney/which-2007-khan-movie-do-you-want-us-to-talk-about-on-the-next-khandaan-podcast) The Kalank Teaser (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmhXhTmP0a0&t=8s) 9 of the World’s Most Famous Actresses Play Hollywood, Nollywood, Bollywood Squared! 30: Ep 30- Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) ft Ashanti Omkar
Mar 05 2019 114 mins
Episode 30 of the Khandaan podcast stars Aamir Khan in a movie directed by Kiran Rao - 2011’s Dhobi Ghat with Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra, and Kriti Malhotra. Joining us to discuss this surprise winner (the other movies up for votes this week included Dabangg and My Name is Khan) is the BBC’s Ashanti Omkar (http://twitter.com/ashantiomkar) , who has a personal connection to the film. Dhobi Ghat proved to be an interesting topic for conversation, more so because it raised some important points about context and intent in art and cinema; and how perceptions can change over time. We also discuss a few new projects: Sujoy was the only one to watch Isn’t It Romantic, the new Rebel Wilson romcom co-starring Priyanka Chopra, and he has some non-spoilery thoughts. On the topic of PC, we also discuss Sucker, the brand new single by the Jonas Bros. co-starring their significant others (including Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner). We also have a few things to say about KGF, the big Kannada movie creating waves across India, and Super Deluxe, an upcoming Tamizh movie. Also, keep an eye out for a special episode on Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. We’re bringing back our Curious Cat (https://curiouscat.me/khandaan) for it and welcome all questions and comments. A Timeline: 05.50 Nominees for our next podcast 15.17 A PC Double Event: Isn’t It Romantic and Sucker 34.09 KGF and Super Deluxe 48.25 The Main Event: Dhobi Ghat Voting is now open for our next episode. 29: Ep 29- Gully Boy/ Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi
Feb 20 2019 87 mins
Episode 29 of the Khandaan podcast has arrived with 1991’s Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, starring Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt. Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, this remake of the beloved Hollywood classic It Happened One Night was a star vehicle for two enfant terribles of the age — Bhatt, who was setting Bollywood on fire with her unconventional antics, and Khan, who was tipped to be the next big thing. We also discuss two hot new releases: Shelley Chopra Dhar’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, starring father-daughter duo Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor along with Rajkumar Rao and Juhi Chawla. It is probably the most high profile LGBTQ film to have come out of the Hindi film industry in a while (not forgetting 2016’s Kapoor & Sons, which was a very different film). You can hear more about it [here](https://audioboom.com/posts/7172600-ep-237-love-is-love-dir-shelley-chopra-dhar-talks-ek-ladki-ko-dekha-to-aisa-laga) on the Upodcast interview with the director. The second new release we discuss is, of course, the movie that has fast become the talk of the town: Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Raaz, and Kalki Koechlin. Based on the real life journey of street rappers Divine and Naezy, this movie is attracting almost universal love. A Timeline: 02.45 Nominees for our next podcast 03.35 Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga 13.05 Gully Boy 52.45 The Main Event: Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin Shownotes: [Bombay 70](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmC4elJcICA): a short documentary on Naved Shaikh a.k.a Naezy one of the inspirations behind Gully Boy Upodcast Bollywood Edition [interview with Shelley Chopra Dhar](http://upodcasting.com/2019/02/12/ep-237-love-is-love-dir-shelley-chopra-dhar-talks-ek-ladki-ko-dekha-to-aisa-laga/) Voting is now open for our next episode. 27: Ep 27- Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Jan 24 2019 101 mins
Episode 27 of the Khandaan podcast brings to you the one, the only Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)! As soon as it showed up on our list, we knew this was going to be everyone’s pick because this movie is integral to our understanding of Bollywood today. Episode 25 of the Khandaan podcast is also our last for the year 2018! Thank you for joining us this year as we made our way through the highs and lows of the three Khans of Bollywood. We hope to welcome 2019 with a few changes and some surprises but first, we need to wrap up this year. 23: Ep 23- Raakh ft Shivani Tripathi and Anisha Jhaveri
Nov 29 2018 111 mins
Welcome to Episode 23 of the Khandaan podcast in which we welcome Shivani Tripathi (@Shivani510) writer for The Aerogram, Brown Girl Magazine, The NRI and the return of friend of the show Anisha Jhaveri (@Jhavanis). In this episode, we go back to one of the earliest releases of Aamir Khan, Raakh- directed by Aditya Bhattacharya. The movie is tough to find even though there was a Redux version released in theaters, the home release was stalled. The movie also stars Supriya Pathak and Pankaj Kapur but they don't share any screen time together. The movie was a box office failure but has been gaining some critical acclaim after the redux version released in festivals. We also discuss how the latest season of Koffee With Karan has been working for us. The emergence of box office draws Ayushmann Khuranna (Vicky Kaushal, Rajkummar Rao) and if there is a changing of the guard for Bollywood heroes. Asim also forces everyone to watch the new song promo for Zero, Mera Naam Tu as he wants to talk about his favorites as usual. If there are movies or guests you would like to see featured, do remember to drop us a line at [email protected] We have also brought back the listener's poll so head out to the link below to choose which 2014 movie we'll be discussing on the next episode! You can vote for PK, Kick, Jai Ho or Happy New Year! (https://www.opinionstage.com/asimburney/which-2014-movie-do-you-want-us-to-talk-about-on-the-ep-24-of-khandaan-podcast)

22: Ep 22- Thugs Of Hindostan ft Sunny Singh
Nov 13 2018 110 mins
Welcome to Episode 22 of the Khandaan podcast in which we welcome Dr. Sunny Singh, writer, academic, and co-founder of the UK’s Jhalak Prize for writers of color. Her latest book, Amitabh Bachchan, is now available from the BFI. In this episode, we deviate slightly from the usual in that our main movie is one that just made its debut – Vijay Krishna Acharya’s unsanctioned take on Pirates of the Caribbean: YRF’s Thugs of Hindostan (2018) starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub. Despite being universally panned within hours of its first screening by critics and audiences alike, in a true testament to our unique brand, we have successfully assembled a panel of viewers who managed to unironically enjoy this film (except Amrita, who in addition to being the resident wet blanket, also elected to go on holiday instead of making the trip to the theater). Join us as we discuss whether this film is a worthy successor to the films of Manmohan Desai (Sunny), or Vijay Krishna Acharya belongs in the same bracket as Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder (Asim, batty as usual), something-something-yawn (Sujoy), and Aamir jokes that are too mean (even for Amrita). We also discuss a few trailers – the already controversial Kedarnaath with Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan; 2.0 with Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar; and, of course, Zero starring all who are dear to Asim. Keep a ear open for Sujoy as he tries to save his skin after Asim paints a large target on all of us. If there are movies or guests you would like to see featured, do remember to drop us a line at [email protected] To Enter and win the Thugs Of Hindostan goodie bag, head over to https://www.kenz-now.com/campaign/win-a-thugs-of-hindostan-merchandise-bundle/

20: EP 20- Thugs - Sui Dhaaga- Suryavanshi ft @MaxDaVinci
Oct 04 2018 104 mins
For Episode 20, our guest is a fellow podcaster: Maxdavinci of The Lewd Cabal, your go-to podcast for an eclectic selection of topics including deep dives into South Indian cinema, food, sports, and a whole lot more to come. For his debut appearance on The Khandaan, Max chose an evergreen classic: 1992’s Salman Khan-starrer, Suryvanshi. This legendary piece of cinema was allegedly a figment of Salman’s imagination – a film unmatched, as Max points out, in not only Hindi but in all Indian cinema for decades in its scope and concept. The costumes, the special effects, the homage to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the boundless racism, the indifferent songs that at least two of the four people on the podcast have seared into their lizard brain, the camera’s unerring eye for thrusting bosoms… this is a movie that offers much to the discerning viewer. Co-starring an extremely hammy Saeed Jaffrey, a disconcertingly excellent Amrita Singh, a sanskaari Sheeba, Sushma Seth, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan, and Puneet Issar, Suryavanshi is a lot. As usual, we also discuss some of the new releases and trailers – Thugs of Hindustan and Bazaar, as well as Sui Dhaaga, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam and Pataakha. We discuss the sheer and welcome reliability of filmmakers such as Vishal Bhardwaj and Mani Ratnam before somehow ending with plans to watch 1990’s Tum Mere Ho.If there are movies or guests you would like to see featured, do remember to drop us a line at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) Give Away: If you want to win 1 of 3 Sui Dhaaga- Made In India goodie bags, head over to https://www.kenz-now.com/campaign/win-sui-dhaaga-made-in-india-goodie-bag/ To hear more from Max you can head over to the Lewd Cabal page (http://www.thelewdcabal.com/)

19: Ep 19- Dil Se ft Raja Sen
Sep 12 2018 101 mins
On Episode 19 of the Khandaan podcast, we continue our limited edition run of favorites with everybody’s preferred incendiary film critic, Raja Sen. A reviewer with Hindustan Times and the author of a children’s book based on The Godfather (!), The Best Baker in the World, Raja has chosen Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se (1998) to discuss. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with a brand new restored print available on Netflix, this movie threw up some interesting reactions on the panel. Raja maintains that this is Shahrukh Khan’s best and most natural performance to date, but Sujoy and Amrita had issues with the film on a personal and political level. Asim was too dazzled by Preity Zinta to care. Starring Manisha Koirala as a beautiful young terrorist from India’s Northeast, SRK as a radio journalist, and Preity in her breakout debut as the fresh young thing next door, Dil Se has garnered quite a reputation over the years even though it underperformed upon release. We discuss this phase of SRK’s career, our issues with the performances, and of course no episode of Khandaan is complete without a little gossip. We also discuss some of the new releases over the past fortnight – from the Spiderman video game to Stree, which is garnering stellar reviews (including one from Raja). We also touch upon Amazon’s Jack Ryan, a series that Asim and Amrita took serious issue with. If there are movies or guests you would like to see featured, do remember to drop us a line at [email protected]

18: Ep 18- Ghoul- Dil To Pagal Hai ft @lipstickpatrol
Aug 29 2018 124 mins
We’re changing things up a trifle in Episode 18 of the Khandaan Podcast – for the next few episodes, we’ve asked our guests to choose their favorite Khan movie to discuss. First up, is the delightful Sammy (a.k.a. @lipstickpatrol on Twitter) with Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). Directed by Yash Chopra, this candy floss romance might barely have a plot but it has some stellar 90s tunes by Uttam Singh, an incredibly talented music director who seemingly disappeared in the years since this movie was released. Featuring some of the romantic tropes that have come to define the SRK brand of romance, this movie also won Karisma Kapoor a National Award for her role as Nisha, the best friend whose love remains unrequited. Surprisingly the only movie to star Madhuri as “A Yash Chopra Heroine”TM DTPH makes for some lively conversation between the hosts and the guest. As usual we also discuss a few new releases and trailers such as the upcoming Sui Dhaaga starring Asim’s forever crush Anushka Sharma – once again facing a troll army online even as she excels onscreen. Asim also gives his quick thought’s on Netflix’ new 3 part horror series GHOUL starring Radhika Apte. Subscribers are reminded that Khandaan is currently accepting nominations for our special run. Please send your suggestions for movies of the Khans that you feel we must watch to [email protected] Lastly, we ask subscribers to consider donating to a good cause: the recent devastating floods in the southern Indian state of Kerala has left many homeless with their lives destroyed. If you have any change to spare (even 10 bucks), please visit CMDRF to donate. If you would rather donate to private charities targeting specific groups such as pets, children, the environment, etc. please contact @amritaIQ on Twitter or contact Upodcasting (mailto:[email protected]) and we’d be happy to match you up. Thank you.

17: Ep 17- Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai- Trailer Breakdown
Aug 15 2018 111 mins
Welcome to Episode 17 of the Khandaan Podcast in which our audience thinks it’s doing us a favor and makes us watch Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai (1998). Starring Salman Khan in one of his last candyfloss (?) romance roles, this film evokes strong childhood memories of going to the cinema for two of our hosts. Co-starring Twinkle Khanna in one more role she couldn’t play, JPKHH makes a number of strange choices – there’s Anupam Kher is a role tailor made for Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever in a role meant for Laxmikant Berde, Namrata Shirodkar with enough charisma for a female lead, and young master Aditya Narayan who gets on everybody’s nerves. Asim and Amrita were Not Fans of this movie but Sujoy outed himself as a sleeper Salman fan when he refused to let his co-hosts ruin his fond memories of this film. But before we get to the good stuff, we make our way through all the new trailers that came out this past week – the execrable Batti Gul Meter Chalu (rechristened by Sujoy in a way that will get us banned), the surprising Manmarziyan, the puzzling Laila Majnu, and a whole host of other Bolly things you’ll want to hear about. Subscribers are reminded that Khandaan is currently accepting nominations for our special run. Please send your suggestions for movies of the Khans that you feel we must watch to [email protected] But first, coming up are a few episodes with guests who wish to discuss their favorite Khan movie.

16: Ep 16- Dhadak- Karan Arjun ft BethLovesBolly
Aug 01 2018 108 mins
In Episode 16 of the Khandaan Podcast, we continue with our new limited edition format: this time, a buy-one-get-one-MUFT! MUFT! MUFT! film called Karan Arjun (1995). Starring Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan, this film has penetrated deep into desi pop culture – spawning satirical skits, comedic shorts, and memes galore with its extremely quotable quotes, outsize characters, and a type of masala filmmaking that is both antiquated and sorely missed today (by us, if no one else). This Rakesh Roshan film co-stars Kajol, Mamta Kulkarni, Amrish Puri, Rakhee Gulzar, Ashok Saraf, Johnny Lever, Ranjit, and other well-known and well-beloved actors. This week our Top Bro, Beth of BethLovesBollywood is back – revealing herself to be a first-time viewer in our shocking revelation of the week. We also discuss the brand-new release Dhadak and the many controversies it spawned, sparking some lively discussion. Here is an article (https://www.hindustantimes.com/bollywood/dhadak-differs-from-sairat-in-gaze-not-caste/story-VBYJicOIDHAv7AN0nvDt1M.html) and a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jr2aq3Qu_Qs) that caught our attention. 15: Ep 15- Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar- Sanju- Sacred Games ft Mike McCahill
Jul 10 2018 97 mins
In Episode 15 of the Khandaan Podcast, we switch up our format for a special series: over the next few episodes, we will discuss movies nominated by our audience as their all-time favorites. We begin with 1992’s Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. Starring Aamir Khan, this was the second film made by cousins Aamir and Mansoor Khan, co-starring Ayesha Jhulka, Dipak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, and the always reliable Khulbhushan Kharbanda among others. We are joined this week by The Guardian’s Mike McCahill (https://twitter.com/mike_mccahill) , who was watching this movie for the very first time whereas Asim, Sujoy and Amrita grew up with this film and its soundtrack as a constant in their younger lives. This movie is also rich in Bollywood trivia, some of which might be found here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROlOyNMsm0U) in the reunion staged by Anupama Chopra and Rajeev Masand (yes, this is the same video that almost drove Amrita mad.) We also discuss the brand-new release Sanju, the whitewash special directed by Raju Hirani starring an eerily excellent Ranbir Kapoor, who rebounds in style from a couple of years of less-than-successful films. Co-starring Sonam Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Karishma Tanna, Anushka Sharma, and Dia Mirza, this movie should have been a knockout but sadly isn’t. Lastly, we look at Sacred Games, the first Indian original commissioned by Netflix. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead, ably supported by a large cast of pitch perfect actors (including Kubra Sait, Radhika Apte, Neeraj Kabi, Jitendra Joshi and others), it’s based on the Vikram Chandra novel and adapted to screen by Varun Grover, Smita Singh (not Bansal as Amrita says in the podcast, sorry), and Vasant Nath. Co-directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, this series sparked quite a bit of conversation. Subscribers are reminded that Khandaan is currently accepting nominations for our special run. For episode 16, we have Shah Rukh Khan’s early era.

14: Ep 14- Race 3- Khamoshi The Musical
Jun 25 2018 104 mins
Episode 14 of the Khandaan Podcast brings you 1996’s Khamoshi the Musical which stars Salman Khan, Manisha Koirala, Nana Patekar, Seema Biswas, and a very lovely Helen. However, [Asim](http://www.twitter.com/asimburney), [Sujoy](https://twitter.com/9e3k) and [Amrita](https://twitter.com/Amritaiq) begin the podcast with a raucous discussion of Salman’s latest blockbuster, (the widely and justifiably reviled) Race 3\. A bro-laden movie so terrible, it drives Salman-lover Asim into enraged incoherence while Sujoy and Amrita try not to die laughing. Please excuse the f-bombs in this family-friendly podcast. Tired out from all the emotion, we examine Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut feature: a sensitive depiction of a tragedy-magnet family. Featuring several themes Bhansali would go on to explore with better budgets, Khamoshi nevertheless manages to retain some of its charm at this long distance of 24 years. The songs have withstood the test of time and the performances are better than any of us expected. Amrita, however, maintains her irrational dislike of Manisha. Subscribers are reminded that Khandaan is currently accepting nominations for our special run, which begins with our next episode, #15\. 13: Ep 13- Don 2- Khandaan Podcast
Jun 13 2018 93 mins
Welcome to Episode 13 (gulp!) of the Khandaan Podcast where we discuss 2011’s Don 2, starring Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani, Lara Dutta, and Kunal Kapoor. In this podcast, we talk about the consistently high production values of Excel Entertainment that allow it to make movies that don’t age as badly as other Bollywood product. However, how far can technical excellence take you when the writing is merely ho-hum? This episode left Asim, Sujoy and Amrita with more questions than answers – will Farhan ever make another movie? Were PC and SRK destroying Bharatiya Sanskriti during this film? How hot is Lara Dutta? Etc. We also discuss the blockbuster new release "Veere di Wedding" and the amazing response it has received from male reviewers who are massively upset with its brand of female power. We also look at the many controversies that emerged from this film, including Swara Bhaskar’s infamous statement about Pakistan. A few words are also spared for "Bhavesh Joshi", a movie that dared but couldn’t bear (any fruit at the box office). Asim looks forward to your outraged responses to this podcast! He would also like to remind you that Khandaan is currently accepting nominations for our special run, which begins with episode 15\. 12: Ep 12- Jann E Mann - Khandaan Podcast
May 29 2018 103 mins
Welcome to Episode 12 of the Khandaan Podcast! This week we’re discussing 2006’s Jaan-e-Mann, starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Preity Zinta. While JEM has gained a bit of a cult following in the years since its release, it was a disastrous flop when it came out. An uneasy marriage between troubling Bollywood stereotypes and a whimsical ode to classic Hollywood musicals, JEM is by turns fantastic and repulsive. Asim, Sujoy and Amrita have plenty to discuss when it comes to the themes of the film, its reception, the stars, the makers and its place in Bollywood history. Meanwhile, we discuss a few housekeeping items of interest to our loyal listeners and discuss a few current events such as the reactions to the Race 3 trailer, Salman Khan’s increasingly visible disinterest in song-and-dance routines, and a trio of remarkable interviews: one in which Madhuri Dixit can barely hide her disdain for Rajeev Masand; and two in which [Anupama Chopra skillfully drew out Madhuri](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrLQdSk2EcY&feature=youtu.be) and [Bobby Deol,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrLQdSk2EcY&feature=youtu.be) who dominated the chatter cycle this week with a highly emotional response. Don’t miss the amazing gifs by Sujoy on our Upodcast Twitter feed! We also recommend this fun [Madhuri interview by AIB](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG-9BZiocYg&feature=youtu.be)! 11: Ep 11- Hum Saath Saath Hain- Khandaan Podcast
May 09 2018 75 mins
Welcome to Episode 11 of the Khandaan Podcast and 1999’s Hum Saath Saath Hain, Sooraj Barjatya’s follow-up to his game-changing Bollywood classic, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun... Starring Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, and Mohnish Behl alongside the regular Rajshri cast of Reema Lagoo as Maa, Alok Nath as Babuji, Shakti Kapoor as lower income (Muslim) dost, and other assorted stereotypes, this film was the biggest hit of the year when it came out. Together, the reunited trio of Asim, Sujoy and Amrita investigate whether it has held up or indeed, if there is anything to hold up at all. A remake of the Ramayana, this movie isn’t short on homilies on the ideal family – and it is an orgy of patriarchy upheld by traditional gender roles interrupted by mediocre songs laboriously staged for minutes on end. Others have brilliantly lampooned the cultural aspects of this film already, so we kept our discussion to the film itself. HSSH provides many a LOL, none of them intentional. It is not a film we would recommend to anyone, not even budding Salman Khan fans. Our audience might disagree – and we read out a few responses from our listeners on why they chose this movie. The three of us also discuss exciting trailers for upcoming movies (Bhavesh Joshi, Veere di Wedding, and the Madhuri Dixit-starrer Bucket List) and defend Sujoy’s honor on the internet. 10: Ep 10- Andaz Apna Apna- Khandaan Podcast
Apr 24 2018 76 mins
Welcome to Episode 10 of the Khandaan Podcast, where we come at last to the one movie we’ve constantly been quoting – 1994’s Andaz Apna Apna. Starring the rare movie combination of Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, this Khantastic film was a big flop when it came out but has attained cult status since then as seen in our poll where it beat out the most commercially successful film of 1994, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…? Costarring Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, and Paresh Rawal in key roles, this Rajkumar Santoshi film offers a veritable who’s who of character actors who elevate the sketches that make this movie a classic. If you can make it past [Asim](http://www.twitter.com/asimburney), [Sujoy](https://twitter.com/9e3k) and [Amrita](https://twitter.com/Amritaiq) crying with laughter as they struggle to describe what they liked about this film, you might find old memories awakened. However, is this a movie we can recommend to newbies and non-native speakers? Join us as we discuss weighty issues such as effectively translating comedy, self-referential comedy in Bollywood, Aamir Khan’s undercooked comedic chops, and whether we had the same tastes as children as we do now. 9: Ep 9- Kal Ho Naa Ho ft Anisha Jhaveri
Apr 11 2018 62 mins
Welcome to Episode 9 of the Khandaan Podcast, where we turn our eagle eyes toward Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), starring Shah Rukh Khan at the height of his stardom. Commonly believed to be a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s weepie Anand (1971), starring Rajesh Khanna at the height of his stardom, KHNH is a souped-up melodrama best remembered nostalgically than rewatched in the present according to podcast consensus. This week we are joined by guest host and writer/journalist Anisha Jhaveri as Sujoy continues to chase success as influencer to the sundar, susheel, and thodi special. Asim, Amrita and Anisha initially approached KHNH with eagerness, especially since it beat out Tere Naam, an excruciating Salman Khan remake of an excruciating South Indian film, but their joy soon turned to ashes as they were forced to confront that their nostalgia was misplaced and this movie was basically a sporadically funny, racist, homophobic mess with extremely unfortunate costume design. We recommend you read Molly Ringwald’s excellent essay (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/personal-history/what-about-the-breakfast-club-molly-ringwald-metoo-john-hughes-pretty-in-pink/amp) on dealing with problematic faves in retrospect after listening to this episode. Episode 9 also includes a short discussion of the short-lived Salman Khan sentencing saga and Asim’s inability to properly understand the visual appeal of SRK walking around aimlessly while dressed in white linen. 8: Ep 8- Chandramukhi ft Tanvi Rastogi from @MovieWalaPod
Mar 26 2018 67 mins
Episode 8 of the Khandaan Podcast features Chandramukhi (1993), starring Sridevi as a celestial being and Salman Khan as her child lover. An uncomfortable mish-mash of Tom Hanks’ Big by way of Telugu blockbuster Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari, starring Chiranjeevi and Sridevi, this little viewed film was a disaster at the box office – surprising none of us. This week we are joined by guest host Tanvi from the MovieWalaPod (https://twitter.com/MovieWalaPod) in the absence of Sujoy, who is off launching a new career as Instagram model. Asim, Amrita and Tanvi all agreed that this was hands down the worst movie they have had to watch for a podcast, featuring: graphic child abuse, a pedophiliac alien, ALL the bad guys, and incredibly shoddy production values. We also discuss other movies that released the same year, notably Darr, and Asim requested an anthropology lesson regarding the finer techniques of dancing for Shiva, thereby exposing Tanvi and Amrita as Bad Indians. Thanks, Asim. For a more appreciative review of Chandramukhi’s nonexistent charms, we recommend Beth Watkins’ much more patient article (http://theculturalgutter.com/movies-2/chandra-mukhi-1993.html) . In the meantime, Asim would like you to know this is not Chand ka Tukda, the other Sridevi-Salman starrer with much better music. Note: The Khandaan podcast is an interactive experience!
