This sermon was preached after a 2-week absence from the pulpit, as Spurgeon tried to recover from the great tragedy of October 19, 1856, when an evil man yelled "fire" in his assembly and caused, by the resultant stampede, several people to die. He lifts up Christ as his response to it all, for Christ, he says, comforted him with this thought.
