This first English-language episode of the Solar Investor's Guide is about redox flow batteries. Flow batteries have the great advantage that power and capacity are separate. They consist of reactors and tanks with the liquid electrolyte in which the energy is stored. If you need more storage capacity, you simply use larger tanks and more electrolyte liquid.
Energy Center is an iron flow storage system from ESS Inc., a company located in Oregon in the United States. The storage device offers 1.16 megawatt hours of storage capacity and a maximum charging capacity of 174 kilowatts. This modular solution comes completely in a container and can be adapted to many commercial and network applications.
Karsten Schäfer talks with Alan Greenshields, Director EMEA at ESS, about long-term storage systems and the prospect of redox flow systems with sustainable materials – iron, salt and water.
