In this episode we explore Dune through the lens of its author, Frank Herbert. His beliefs defy easy political classification according to today's preconceived notions, making him difficult to situate. Herbert was a libertarian who was deeply uneasy with market forces, a localist with great sympathy for indigenous and anticolonial causes, and a dyed in the wool environmentalist who voted for Reagan, on top of being a fiend for psychedelics and an inveterate JFK hater. What are we to make of all this? In addition to Herbert's personal beliefs and political philosophy, we explore the many different real-world influences that filled in the details of Herbert's world. Although the series is set some 20,000 years in the future, traces of currently existing human cultures persisted and gave color to this world, from the martial spirit of Caucasian and North African liberation fighters to a liberal mishmash of Buddhist, Muslim, Christian, and other beliefs which continue to inform the faiths and actions of the peoples of this world. Frank Herbert’s original 1965 story, DUNE, was an astounding success.  It has become one of America’s great novels, and is beloved by science fiction fans.  Most certainly apt to fit in with the space opera subset of speculative fiction, the book has been once again recently turned into a two part film series starting with director Denis Villeneuve’s first in the pair DUNE:  PART ONE (2021).  Now he’s back with the second, DUNE:  PART TWO, that has been one of 2024’s biggest successes. Rather than discuss the intricacies of the story, the movie stars an all-star cast.  Timothee Chalamet plays the lead role of Paul Atreides who may or may not be a promised messianic hero.  Also in the cast is Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, among many others.DUNE: PART TWO (2024) received glowing reviews from critics.  With its theatrical success, Warner Brothers appears to have green lit the second book in Frank Herbert’s series DUNE:  MESSIAH.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this new film and gives their thoughts.

Surfing to the Silver Screen Ozark star Julia Garner will play the Silver Surfer in Matt Shakman’s upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Rather than the well-known Norrin Radd version of the comics character, Garner will likely portray Shalla-Bal - a version of the Silver Surfer found in the Earth X storyline from Marvel comics. Unsurprisingly, the backlash on the internet was almost immediate. Dune: Messiah Prophecy Fulfilled Denis Villeneuve and Legendary are officially developing a third installment in the new Dune franchise. The recent sequel, Dune Part Two, is still playing in box offices to great success having grossed more than $630 million worldwide. Between all of this success, the HBO series focused on the Bene Gesserit is still scheduled to premiere sometime in 2024. Supergirl Finds Director I, Tonya, Cruella, and Dumb Money director Craig Gillespie will head the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie for DC Studios. Studio co-chair James Gunn has alluded that his vision for this iteration of Supergirl will be a more serious take than the recent portrayal on the CW Supergirl series. Olivia Wilde, Margot Robbie and X-Men producer Simon Kinberg are joining forces for a feature adaptation of Avengelyne, a comic book character from Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld. Maggie Gyllenhaal took to Instagram last week to share the first images from her upcoming film, The Bride! which stars Christian Bale as Frankenstein's monster and Jessie Buckley as his bride. The Bride! is set in 1930s Chicago and puts a spin on the iconic Frankenstein lore. Beau Willimon, who is known for writing the Netflix political drama series House of Cards, has been tapped to write the script for James Mangold's upcoming Dawn of the Jedi Star Wars prequel film. Willimon has previously worked on Season One of Andor. A24 has dropped the first trailer for Maxxxine, the final chapter in the acclaimed X horror trilogy from Ti West that stars Mia Goth. The film releases in theaters on July 5.

Leto is suspicious of the stewardship but looks to form an alliance with the Fremen, the desert natives.Dune was the 10th highest grossing film of 2021 and won six Oscars. It received praise for its score by Hans Zimmer, cinematography, special effects and its faithfulness to the source material.Recommendability scores for Dune were very high, especially high from fans of the original novel.
