Understanding your relationship with alcohol is a critical first step toward making positive changes.

  • Self-awareness is key. Fact self-awareness will get you through to the other side. We’ll learn more about other factors such as the craving brain, nervous system regulation, rewiring your brain, replenishing your nervous system soon. But for now, let’s tease out what you know about your story.
  • Take time to reflect on two areas: Why you drink and how you drink?

WHY

  • We know that people that started drinking in early teenage years are at higher risk of developing a problem with alcohol. Was this you?
  • We know that people with parents/close relatives are, as well as those that have a high ACES Trauma score. This involves people that have experienced:
    • Physical, sexual or verbal abuse.
    • Physical or emotional neglect.
    • Separation or divorce.
    • A family member with mental illness.
    • A family member addicted to drugs or alcohol.
    • A family member who is in prison.
    • Witnessing a parent being abused.

Make a personal note if you have experienced any of these.

  • There may be other life hurdles that you are experiencing as well: financial stress, divorce, isolation, mental health factors.
  • Reflect on your early years. How did your parents drink? Greater family? Was alcohol in plentiful supply or out of view? Consider how friends, family, and cultural norms influence your alcohol consumption growing up.
  • Now let’s consider your motivations for drinking (ie limiting beliefs), that is, for what reason do you believe you need it? To fit in? Have fun? Celebrate? Ease loneliness? List all of the things you can think of!

HOW

  • Finally, lets get a picture of how you drink — socially, stress-related, to self-medicate or is it habitual? Do you drink with others or home alone? Do you drink only on weekends or during the week and at what time of the day? Understanding this helps you identify the underlying needs that alcohol may be fulfilling.
